Caedia

The duo had spent an hour or two wandering around the city before Caedia realized they were completely and utterly lost. This city was far larger than any other city or dungeon she had ever visited. It was truly a wonder as the snow fell from the sky. Colossal buildings that reached up towards the heavens and some kind of metal carts or chariots  drove the people around. Completely and utterly awe inspiring. It was also monstrously large.

The Arisen could find her way through the forest, explore the most dangerous of monster dens, and carve a path through an isle infested with beasts. She had also been outwitted by a city. She didn't even turn towards her companion as she uttered, "We're lost."

David

"Familiars? Not really. They are autonomous entities that have simply sworn their services to me. Being a familiar would imply that I give them mana or have a mental connection to them. I lack both of those."

At the soldier's question David furrowed his brow and immersed himself in thought for a bit before coming up with an answer. "I suppose we could simply walk around and have The Scholarly scan the areas until we find another anomaly. Of course, there is always the option of trying to build our own opening. It would be difficult but it should be possible. In theory."

The Scholarly had his eyes closed in thought as his formidable mind attempted to come up with a viable solution. Portals were inherently unstable devices but this plane of existence was especially apt at making them nigh unusable.

While the two men were enraptured in their planning The Joyous bounded over towards Ibarra and stood next to him with an inscrutable smile plastered across the face. As if she saw some great joke in him that only she could understand.

Sarse: When and how did you realize Saminga and Lucifer were wrong?

Infected

As soon as the birds observed the orbs of light gather they let out a few shrieking caws before flying off the tree branches and high into the sky. At the sound of the birds a few of the hulking silhouettes farther away from the clearing scattered deeper into the heart of the forest but the ones closer were already a lost cause. The light easily enveloped the Infected already in the clearing and the few Hunters who had decided to get closer were completely obliterated along with the first line of trees.

PARIAH

The virus continued to lead the cowboy around the city and had a tight grip on the man's hand with the Leader Hunter trailing after them, but his connection to the others was eternal and constant. He knew what they knew and from the birds who had watched and overlooked he knew what needed to be done.

The Hunters and other Infected scattered throughout the forest. PARIAH would not risk unexpected surprises due to the ignorance of the creatures. They would survive in the forest well enough and would no longer threaten his safety.

The deep places in the earth shook and crumbled as enormous creatures sabotaged tunnels and closed off entire sections until the depths were sealed off completely from the surface. For now.

From the forest birds emerged. Given separate orders than the other Infected hundreds of them left the forest and the and the quickly collapsing tunnels. If such a threat could exist than there might be others. He would not be ignorant again. They flew quickly and began to spread throughout the city. Their beady eyes gazed upon the entirety of the city as their descent  to get a better view of the place began. The ones in the air high above the man in white robes and the girl simply began to fly in a lazy circles as they continued their observations. It would prudent to keep many eyes on these ones.

Ann

The cloaked woman drifted off away from Sarse at his words and her gaze took on a piercing quality as it searched through the people scattered throughout the mall before she sensed something. It was akin to a System but at the same time it was alien to her. Something that was impossible considering that she knew all the Systems and their domains, but somehow this one was unknown to her.

Her sight shifted towards the main entrance just as a man of bronze made its way into the mall. People parted and moved out of its way, awed and fearful of the entity's sheer presence. His features were the very definition of handsome and it was dressed in a gleaming armor with an ever changing symbols that were engraved into it. Instead of eyes there were only lustrous pools of blue light.

At the sight of Ann those glimmering pools narrowed and it opened its mouth to release an unholy sound. A sound not unlike a trumpet blared with enough volume to be heard throughout the entirety of the mall which soon began to feel the effects of whatever the being had done. It shook and shuddered before the most unlikely of thing happened. The mall began to liquefy. Walls began to collapse into muddy liquid along with the entirety of the first floor.

The sound of human bodies impacting against the ground and bones being broken filled the area. Humans on the ground floor and supernaturals who had survived the sudden surprise quickly began to flee the seemingly unstable building as the metal man stood at the center of it all. Then in an instant he lifted his hand and bursts of water were fired at the trio by the restaurant with enough force to puncture steel.

Wiseman

The aged man took a small sip of tea before beginning his story.  "I was born in the city-state of Cujam, and I had not even reached eight before I discovered my talent with magic. The magic that many sorcerers in this place use require mana but the magic of my world is a purer and older craft. We take in the energies of the elements and channel them through our bodies. Something that requires both caution and knowledge in order to tap into effectively. I was already superior to my older classmates when I was about twelve and once I had reached 16 I was already one of the most exceptional students my mentors had known."

The warlock smiled in nostalgia. The memory of the bumbling youth he had once been surfacing in his mind. "I was eventually called to the city of Duhr to take an apprenticeship under the Magi. Their lineage was filled with magic users of impossible strength, but they were perhaps the culmination of their family. I learned under them for ten years before my apprenticeship was over. What I brought back changed Cujam. Devices that could ward off monsters, or attract them, apparatuses that could increase the strength of magic, and my own personal projects: The Wings of Heart and magnus."

As he said this the area behind his back glowed with a bright light and multiple objects resembling daggers appeared behind Wiseman's back and constantly rotated in the shape of a circle. They constantly changed colors even as the magus continued to speak. "I discovered something unique within the heart of man. I called it forth and brought it into the material open. An expression of the soul and mind in the physical realm. It allowed my people to fly and it did something more. Some were made stronger, others gained greater senses, and others were also gifted with a myriad of smaller talents to aid them."

Then he reached into a pocket and pulled out one of the blank cards and placed it on the table. "But all of it would have been impossible without this. My greatest achievement. Everything in the universe has a physical component and a magna essence. Magnus allow me to draw out this magna essence and seal them. This does make the physical component fade from existence but the moment the magna essence is released it simply reforms the physical component around itself. However living beings cannot be stored within magnus, and through my experiments I discovered this quality that The Wings of Heart stem from. I can only assume this is what is stopping me from taking the magna essence of living creatures."

He drained the rest of his tea from the cup and then he raised the magnus. Prismatic light was pulled from the cup into the card and while the object soon faded from existence you could see the exact same cup inside the card. "This changed trade and warfare in Cujam in ways that no one was prepared for. I was made grand adviser to the king as we expanded our borders and made ourselves great. Other nations attempted to stop us but the advantage of magnus was an enormous one. I personally sacked the city of Alfard and razed one of the great rainforests of Anuenue. Cujam was a world power and I spent the majority of my life keeping it that way. And just as I kept it safe from threats on the outside I suppressed crime and corruption within. I've found that an iron fist is an incredibly useful tool. And now I am here."

Done with speaking Wiseman leaned back into his chair. "What about you, Butler? What is your origin?"

Infected

And then light began to dance, and a spear formed. More focus, more precise, more brilliant then his normal spears. It then shot from the darkness, shooting towards the beast, bent on removing that corrupted and fallen beast from the world.

While the Hunter was certainly fast it could not dodge the spear of light and was struck in the chest. The weapon simply vaporized most of the creature's torso and exploded once it struck the ground which launched the Infected forward. It fell, dead, in a heap a few feet away from the girl but the night was far from over.

The first thing that could be heard once the Hunter died was the cawing of birds. Dozens of them flying towards the area and overlooking the people near the fire with red, beady eyes. They observed and saw all they could see of the area and soon began to land on the taller trees that stood around the makeshift stable.

Then there was a roar. A terrible sound that eclipsed the one previously bellowed by the now dead Hunter. Then the sound of many feet crunching against the light layer of snow could be heard from all sides. It didn't even take a few minutes before the source of the sound was revealed.

A group of humanoid Infected whose numbers were greater than that of the birds in the trees. Some were almost normal while others were horribly mutated. Many had blades for arms and some had bloated skin to help cushion themselves from harm. They were running straight at the group and while some moved at an average speed for a human others were exceptionally quick. Still within the boundaries of man but for a normal group of humans this was certain death.

The Infected began to pour in from all sides as the birds continued to watch. Their calculating gaze making sure not to miss a single action made by the robed man.

The burning log stuck the Hunter's side with considerable force for a human but the beast was not harmed in the slightest. However the attack did make it shift its target to the young human. So it returned to its position on all fours and lunged at her, but that was far from her only concern. The loud sound of foliage being crush could be heard throughout the area a group of Hunters and lesser Infected began to close in on the area, attracted by the loud roar.

David

The redhead walked towards Ibarra and as he did The Hidden was quickly replaced with The Joyous and The Scholarly. Then he held out his hand for the soldier to shake. "I'm David, and these to are The Scholarly and The Joyous. Any place we're going specifically right now?"

David

"Don't talk about things you have no bloody clue about. I didn't ask to be made that way. I don't remember my real name, I don't remember my own relatives, all that was dear to me was taken from me by a cruel whim. So shut up. Just shut up..."

The redhead gave a light sigh and began to lean a bit more on his staff. "Well, the duel itself was entertaining enough. If you ever need an ally I'll be willing to help as repayment for the little fight."

Then his gaze shifted over to the soldier and David said, "I feel like tagging along with you. There are interesting things that could be found when running around this city looking for dimensional anomalies. And as you've seen I do have my own uses."

David

The redhead simply gave a polite smile at the animosity directed at him by Mordred. "No need to be so rude. All I gave you was what you desired. And considering you are wearing armor that no one else can perceive you were upholding the idea of a fair duel even less than I was."

The Hidden skulked back to David without a wasted movement and silently stood by the superior illusion's side.

Infected

Within the dark forest dozens of shapes moved. Some where vaguely humanoid while others weren't. Hulking beasts with pink flesh accompanied these smaller beings as they searched the forest for any creature foolish enough to wander out in the night.

Spoiler for Hiden:

As they continued to wander the group slowly began to separate and spread out in search for prey and one of the larger creatures wandered around by itself within the twilight woods. It was far from quiet in its searching. Simply going through bushes and foliage that stood in its way and its clawed hands thumping against the ground with every movement. Attracted by the light and smoke drifting in the air the Hunter slowly approached an area until it saw a girl sitting in front of a fire, but it's attention was quickly diverted to the stable behind her.

There it saw three animals. A person would have identified them as two horses and a pony, but the Hunter paid no need to what they were. It stood up on it's two hind legs and gave a terrifying roar that could wake the drowsiest man before charging forwards, its arms swiping out at anything that stood between it and the creatures in the stable.

The Hidden reacted to the unforeseen defense with the experience of a seasoned fighter. A dagger lashed out against the shaft of the spear with enough force to knock it out of Mordred's grasp and the other obscured hand dropped its dagger and curled into a fist before moving to strike the knight's seemingly armored chest with enough force to shatter concrete.

With supernatural speed Mordred knocked away all the daggers but The Hidden was already closing in. The spear gave her reach but his speed easily surpassed what she had shown so far. Even with that extra length she would still be incapable of hitting him and the robed figure was sure of this. With that knowledge he pulled out a second dagger to match the on he held in his other cloaked hand and rushed at her with the entirety of his speed. One dagger was held out to parry the spear and the other dagger was aimed at her throat.

Blame Wanderer for not giving the kid a bath.

Is it adjusting the speed just to gauge my skill? It is ridiculous how fast it is even if playing around. I bit more than I could chew off She knew that nothing obviously detrimental happened to her last time she activated her Token, so Mordred was worried about the side effects, but her pride did not allow her to not go all out if she could. She decided to activate the spear when she was sure that she would not handle next attack. That would throw the opponent off-guard in her opinion.

As his throwing began to attain a competent speed The Hidden watched in surprise as Mordred actually managed to begin blocking the daggers with some skill. Considering her difficulty in deflecting the first one she had somehow taken a massive boost in speed or was holding herself back in the beginning. Whatever the case it didn't matter. If she would not come to him then he would simply go to her.

With that in mind The Hidden pulled out three knives and tossed them at a speed that rivaled bullets. One was aimed at the head, another at the heart, and the last at the stomach. Then he pulled out an especially long dagger and began to approach the knight himself with a pace the kept him just behind the knives.

The hooded figure watched patiently as Mordred struck the dagger out of the air with her spear and her charge ceased. If she would not come to him then he would simply give her no other option but to engage him in close quarters. With that in mind he tossed another dagger with speed even greater then the previous one and if she would not come closer he would simply increase the speed and throw another and another until she had to come closer or be slain by the impossibly quick projectiles.

Unperturbed by the fires that now surrounded it, The Hidden pulled back its arm and with inhumane quickness tossed a single throwing dagger at a speed that would be unavoidable to most normal humans. For this flawless assassin it was a lazy throw that was simply aimed at her torso with no specific vital point in mind, but at least it would be a test of her skill.
