Well, since Names brought it up in the Cross Effects OC discussion thread, and since there's a new game for the series (Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennial Girl) coming out, I figured I'd create a thread for it.
So yup, get all your cartography-related, dungeon crawling needs satisfied in here. Since this is a megathread, all the games can be talked about in here at will.
I've played some of 3 and the demo for 4 myself. So then, talk away!
-
I think I played four, imperials and 3ds and what not. Good games albeit hard to find after release
-
I now proclaim myself god of this thread.
Anyway currently on my third playthrough of the millenium grill, Ronin and Hexer only run on expert. All shop items are there as a handicap, but I started with no money as a handicap to my handicap.
Currently in the second stratum, thanks to abuse of the overhead stance and the linefire attack against fenrir and his goons. Hexer mostly just used medica to keep my Ronin running off of more than just hopes and dreams.
Currently enjoying doing sidequests for more useless shit and exp.

So how about a discussion about game mechanics, party set up and class combos and the character replacement system?
-
My party that I brought to endgame first time around was F/R, L/B, N/L for front line, and back line was R/M (Just for the subclassing skill points, mostly just used her as a Runemaster) and M/A.
I like runemaster on the Fortress for the rune skills, which add to defensive capabilities, and for that one passive I forgot the name of that can cancel an elemental attack on the line of the skill's owner.
Bushi on the landshark was fairly obvious: Bloodsurge for more damage. So much damage. TOO MUCH DAMAGE.
Landshark on the nightseeker... I have no clue. Maybe the def up for dual weapons skill? Yeah, that sounds likely.
Runemaster medic was, as aforementioned, just for the skill points. Pure runemaster or go home, multiclassing isn't that good for these guys.
Medic/Arcanist was for versatility, and because the circle regen thing was actually affected by the medic's healing boosting skills, making for more effective healing and various binds (My nightseeker handled status, seeing as he got stronger every time he afflicted one) all in one.
Once they all got to level 99 I retired them into their own classes, and I'm switching around builds to see what I can do with them all. I'll try using the five other classes next playthrough.
-
I have Untold, as Nachos knows. I really like this series, even just having played the one game. :)
-
Get 4 next, it's possibly the best balanced in the series.
And you get an airship, which is awesome

It's definitely on my list of games to play! I chose Untold by recommendation from you and Laith, but IV had just as good reviews where I searched. :)
-
That's because IV and Untold, despite many differences in mechanics and storytelling and features and everything, are just as stronk as each other when it comes down to it.
I personally prefer IV because of the many dungeons per map and the unique feel of some of the classes (Arcanist and the last obtained class), but that's just my opinion. It helps that EOIV was my first EO, and the one I got the most into because of it.
Because nothing beats the first time you play a game, and you fuck up your characters and there's no way you can beat this guy aaaaahhhh okay you won but now you have to make it out alive but you only have two members still kicking and no medic oh shit oh shit why didn't I bring an ariadne thread why aaaaaaahhhh okay I made it jesus OH FUCK A DRAGON GEOMAGNETIC PILLAR HERE I GOOOOOOOOOO
And then you never forget your fucking ariadne threads ever again.
I'm sorry, I kinda lost my train of thought there
-
I. HATE. BLIZZARD KING.
-
TURNS 1-3 ASSORTED SHIT, 4 FOR COUNTER, 5 FOR BREATH, RINSE/REPEAT
NEVER EVER HIT ON COUNTER TURN, TAKE OFF THE HIGHLANDER HURT/ATTACK SKILL IF YOU MUST
ANTI ICE LVL 9-10 NEGATES DAMAGE/HEALS YOU RESPECTIVELY FOR BREATH
congrats you win, up there's all you need to know
-
I got it down to read health but then it used its healing/regen move. :(
-
Doesn't that heal a laughably small amount? Like, 1000?
Just delayed/cross thrust its face in whenever you have the opportunity, and make sure to time it up with the counter pattern so you don't accidentally slap your own shit
And spam fire alch and uber fireshot at all times (Except counter)

Heals like 2050 every time. ;~;

I thought it was weak to volt?
-
Oh right, yeah, volt
I forgot that the dragons make a weird weakness/strength triangle
I MUST COMMIT SUDOKU FOR THIS SHAMEFUR DISPRAY

Only played the demo, waiting on getting it because I'm broke. Now, is Etria our world? Or is the localization team having a laugh? Because I get the sense that it's the latter but, well it's Japan, they could have earnestly made such a connection to the real world as a sly nod wrapped in a joke.
-
Yes, Etria is in our world.
That's all I'll say as it could devolve into a spoiler.
Or rather, an actually relevant and not blatantly told at the beginning of the game spoiler.
-
Right then, so I just got Etrian Odyssey for realzy realz instead of just a demo. :3 General class recommendations since I've decided to start fresh, or am I free to experiment some? Also, potential guild names are cool too. 8)
-
Call your guild Dongles
Or "Extras"
and call them all "movie extra" names like Dave and Mitch, or Extra #1 and Girl #1 and so on
Call your favorite character "Director"
Hue
In this kind of game, take whatever classes you want and experiment. No matter what, barring an old hand being a backseat driver, you are going to fuck up your characters first time 'round.
But bring a medic.
Oh yeah, which etrian odyssey did you get?
-
Oops, thought I said in my post. ^^" ...this is why shouldn't post half awake.
Etrian Odyssey IV. :)
And gotcha. :3 And but of course I will bring a healer of some sort. :3 ...Because otherwise I will be dying. ...A lot. ^^"
-
4 is tardedly forgiving with your character builds with the whole 1-19/20-39/40-99 skills sections, that allow you to carefully consider what you are going to shove all your points into once you get to that level, and making you lust after that one skill for extended periods of time.
And either way, you will be dying a lot. Bring ariadne threads! One every time! Do not fight the FOEs until they re blue (on first playthrough)!
-
i will get all the ariadne threads. all of them
And even when playing the demo and I was brand new and shiny to the whole thing I was evading the FOEs. Because caution is a thing I do halfway gud. :3 ...I didn't get to experience the true terror of FOE until accidentally running into one in III. ^^" Needless to say it didn't end too pretty.
-
What, the beginning FOEs of IV? Those are easy modo.
I won't spoil anything, but let me just say this: sirens. You'll know what I mean once you get there.
-
Nah, I don't remember having any trouble with those. :) ...though I was still overly cautious with them anyway, because being overcareful is what I do at times.
Again it was an FOE in III. If I remember right (it's been a bit since then,) I misjudged my steps and ran into it, so the thing tore me to shreds. ^^" III definitely hates you more than IV does, that's for sure (though I haven't gotten that far in either, the former because of time, the latter because until today all I had was the demo, so I could be totally wrong too).
And... oh dear. We'll see how well I avoid getting being torn to shreds once I get to said sirens. ^^"
-
IV begrudgingly shares its space with you and might secretly like you but expresses its feelings by wailing on you, III outright dislikes you and greets you in the morning with a kick to the shins, II is out to kill you and wear your face as a hat, I pretends to do the same as II but secretly hands you a skill called immunizer to turn a murder session into playtime hour for everyone
And untold is strict but kind and loving at the same time, and while it brings its own characters to the mix it's also fine with letting them sit it out if making your own personalities out of a portrait is your thing. Overall it's the nicest of the siblings, being the grown up murder-playtime EO I.
There's a game for all variances of Darwin mentalities!

Glorious NACHOS wisdom on EO. :3c

Motherfucking defective cart
-
Wait your cartridge fucked up?
that sucks
can you return it?
-
Yup, one in every five attempts to insert the cart into my 3DS results in the game booting up the display. The rest of the time the cart doesn't read as being inserted.
I can return it, luckily, and yes, all my other games work without fail.
-
Must be a one-in-a-thousand thing, since I haven't heard of the problem from anyone else on /eog/ or elsewhere.
I guess all you really lose out of it is the time for another trip to the game shop. Hope you get a good one this time around.
-
Well, electronic equipment is complex, you're always going to get the odd one or two with faults. Lantz has just been unlucky this time....
-
Is there much of an interest among Etrian Odyssey players in the EO team's current work on Persona Q, or is it seen more as a distraction for those who aren't already fans of the Persona franchise?
-
Yeah, Q sounds like the most interesting P4 spinoff to me, because Persona Odyssey 4 sounds p damn rad
I'll definitely be getting it.
-
Yeah, well first faulty Nintendo product I've ever had. One in thousands isn't bad
-
Play untold now, reminds me of my days as party cartographer.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
