Vanguard

Vanguard didn't care about the theatrics or how impossible the fact he could speak was. He had no interest in the dead. Despite that, he couldn't help but answer, or perhaps he was talking to himself.

"I wouldn't remember such things. What is the point of comfort if you can't protect it?"

For a moment, he looked sad. Then, his eyes flashed with fire and his fist clenched shut, shaking like a storm while his face hardened. How stupid. He had gone too far to just quit. His quest would not cease just because of some pretty words.

"Let us meet again, in the place where there is no darkness." He offered the ghost a final farewell before leaving it to fade away like a memory. He jumped unimaginably high, reaching rooftop to rooftop before he reached his destination.

"If you have the time to make up rubbish excuses, at least come up with better ones." A grave voice called out behind the antichrist as soon as she spoke, leaving the warrior to land on the rooftop. His mood was never what one would call joyful, but even by his standards his glare was anything but amused.

"What are you doing here." He told the magician, making it quite clear he was the last thing he wanted to see right now.

The dog barked happily, wagging around the girl as she was being scratched and petted and rubbed in all the right ways. Good, she made a fine servant! It was almost a shame she'd grow old and useless eventually, while she'd be young and pretty forever. Maybe she'd stick around just to gloat about it when the time came. That was definetely somewhere on the checklist. She jumped around then walked alongside her once she got tired of it though, which was just about when she opened her mouth.

"Good huh?" Something about it rubbed her off the wrong way. Despite that, she couldn't help but chuckle, or whatever is the dog equivalent of such a thing.

"You really are an idiot. You didn't help them one bit. You're just being used, does being taken advantage get you off or something? Seasons change, tastes change. But people? People never change. And you delude yourself thinking otherwise."

Uh, stop? Why? This seemed counter productive to her. The smart thing would be to let them weed off eachother until only the strong remain. Otherwise what kind of bitchass cult would she bring up? Even if they did end up stopping and left a circle of space around the holy maiden. Despite that, they  were unresponsive and stupid. Their brains left in drunken stupor left them with movements befitting cattle more than actual people. That just won't do, playing nice with a cow won't make her milk faster.

That's where she came in.

"Hey, hey." She called out, pounding her light fluffy paw on the table adorably. "Listen up. I know you guys are still wet behind the ears, but you can't solve all of your problems with violence. That just won't do..."

She jumped in the middle of the fray, each of her steps pronounced and distinct despite her small frame. She circled around poor Alice and looked at them with the most adorable of puppy eyes, her canine expression a pure testament of innocence and gentleness.

"Please line up in order of how much you don't want to hurt anymore :) "

And so they did, and so they did. Quickly, efficiently, and without complaining. They wouldn't want reasons to want to be healed more, and that was reason enough to listen!

"See? High five bud." She lifted her paw expectantly.

At first, he struggled fearfully, likely scared of what would happen to him. Even the others who were so quick to laugh along with his drunken jest did not dare speak up, as cowardly as rats burrowed in their lonely holes until the bitter end. But the mutated man's eyes filled with tears as he was held by the woman he disgraced. It seemed inadvertently, Costin did help a lot.

Because what she saved that man from was concrete and real in his mind and heart, he couldn't reject her any longer. He just sobbed in her arms, repeating 'thank you' over and over again in soft whimpers. It was a basic psychology tactic, call it the carrot and the stick or the good cop/bad cop, but it proved extremely effective among the masses or something.

Costin didn't really care about any of that, had it not been for her she'd have probably done much worse. Stage was hers though, it would be rude  not to follow her request, and very unladylike!

But suddenly, something unexpected happened in response to her words. The masses rushed and scrambled all over, the sickly and the wounded, the deformed and the ugly. Everyone wished for her blessing, to be saved. The elderly and the sick were the first to be trampled, then some began to fight, trying to win her favor first. Everyone sought health, and happiness, and to be the first to be touched by this new savior figure.

It was horrifying.

Well, to the holy lady probably. Costin found it pretty hilarious. Scum will always be scum, let them die like scum. Hypocrites who settled for their holes only to jump on the first act of kindness and burdening a young child instead of taking matters into their own hands did not deserve the least bit of mercy or sympathy in her eyes.

They were no more than clowns in motley to her, unfit to be called even human. She just ate some from what was supposed to be Alice's bowl and enjoyed the show. "Hey, you might wanna do something." She told her passively, kinda amused by the whole thing.

The ninja smiled and nodded back to back with his companion before turning as rigid as stone, bursting into motion and letting his blade do the work. Left and right they fell, but all of a sudden he noticed a glowing flash of metal. As soon as the gunpowder boomed, his other arm burst into motion, finally revealed from under the cape and caught the bullet right before it smashed the girl's skull. "Careful!"

Before he could fire another one, he split and dashed with impossible speed. He told her, he got her back, and he'd keep that word no matter what.

"Looks like that's it." He sighed before cleaning his blade. Indeed, they just about got the last one, though there weren't more than twenty to begin with. Despite that, he felt sad, unsure what happened to these corpses. He didn't know any of these men, nor could he avenge their names. The least he could do was keep their faces in his heart.

"Let's give them a proper burial." He said, finally resolved. This hadn't been part of his job, but there was no way he could leave these bodies to rot here, surrounded by filth.

"I wonder what happened to cause these dead bodies to move like this..."

Costin

The monster just grinned smugly to himself, bowing to his audience. Despite the girl's genuine request, all she received was laughter and ridicule. While it was only a vocal minority, all things considered, it shut down any and all who could have joined in her communion. Even those who looked in disapproval and pity did not speak up. It was an understandable reaction from both sides. Life was hard, cruel, and unforgiving around these parts.

This sort of practice, to turn even the most earnest of requests, even the purest of feelings into a joke was not uncommon. You could call it a defense mechanism, the sort of hiding that the weak willed, downtrodden and the miserable use when there is no way out of the pit.

There is no such thing as beauty of purity, therefore they laugh at everything in order not to cry. She should know. And yet, the ebony hound could only look down at the pitiful masses, the silent, the sorrowful, the laughing and the sneering alike, with glowing crimson eyes that chilled the tavern with a mixture of blood-lust and disgust.

A voice that couldn't belong to anything short of a demonic hound called all jests, all laughter and all derision in the room to a deadly silence. But nothing, not even the most wrathful of voices, could match up with the contempt and disgust the dog carried in her glare.

"Unsightly."

That girl's hopeful wish was true, and as brilliant as a sun that she could never touch. They made a mockery of it, laughed at it. Dared ridicule it. But that wasn't their sin. No, had it been anyone else, she would have joined in with glee.

But their crime was far greater, and utterly unforgivable. She was the one who presented her, who allowed her this chance to speak. By laughing at it, their laughter was in turn directed at her. She had no reason to feel emphatic or sorry, she brought it upon herself. But she too shared part of the blame, and that was unforgivable. Insects like the one who dared sully her servant were worth less than the worms in the dirt.

A talking maggot would have a more elaborate thought process, a more fulfilling purpose. Compared to the worst of vermin, that man was nothing. She spoke to him only once, locking stares into his eyes like she stared into her worthless familiar rats.

"Never speak again, worm."

And in that moment, what little whines and chuckles he could produce turned to nothing. He'd claw and scream all he'd want, but he had nothing worthwhile to make heard. Such a lowly voice would never be heard again.

Costin puffed her chest and grinned proudly at her companion's words. Not like she cared, but she was more than fine with stealing all the credit. Besides, this might just mean she'd get to live comfortably for a century or two. Just imagine, Saint Andrei, patron of all goodness and justice.

That was probably why she was grinning. Yeah. Meanwhile, hushed murmurs and the like passed through the tavern, it seemed her words did pick peoples interest after all. Good for her! She didn't place her bets on her for nothing.

Eventually, someone cleared from the group and walked weakly towards the holy girl.

A strange creature, with seven legs, a bloating, deformed torso barely fit under a woman's cloth and a single over sized human arms that seemed to be more of a cancer than an actual appendage. Its body was pink and bubbled like blistering flesh, but its shine was more akin the hard exoskeleton of a crustacean, and its head was indistinguishably fish-like despite being human. He seemed to be holding something hidden in cloth, and its bizarre set of eyes looked distressed.

"My son, he's grown sick." He pleaded with a heart wrenching look.

Well, if just a few words on a scrap of paper were enough to make her happy like this, then she guessed she worried over nothing after all. But she nodded in turn and rose over the table, wagging and jumping adorably before crying out in a voice that commanded attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen! May I borrow a moment of your time?" Her eyes and voice were focused on her audience. Much like dominoes, all it took was to silence one in order for another to follow through, and another, and another, and before long the whole tavern went quiet. That is how you manipulate hearts, <3

"Thank you, what an amazing audience. First of all, I am so glad that you all took the time out of your busy days to listen. I promise you won't regret it! My friend here ihas something she'd like to say. Please hear her out!"

At that moment, she had created a golden opportunity, the sort of chance that would only happen once. But this was more than that, it was a test. If she couldn't capitalize on a golden platter like this one, she had no business dreaming big in the first place. She'd bury her snout in her heart and that would be the end of it, and the whole lot of the cavern would likely laugh merrily all the same.

It all came down to her in the end. As a friend, she played her part.

The dog sat in front of her companion, but her ears fell back when she realized just how quiet she went. She really was serious about this whole thing huh? Well, it was honestly dumb, and she shouldn't have to worry about all these things that didn't concern her.

Kids like her just put a whole lot of weight on their shoulders and forgot how to live simple happiness, then ended up crying the loudest when they realized all the stuff they missed out on and it was too late. It almost made her feel sorry for the bloodbag. Well, not quite. She had discarded such feelings long ago. How amusing, if she was really so devoted to this cause she'd play the part too.

The moment she'd waver from her dreams, she'd be the first one to tear her apart, devour and violate her down to the very marrow. That's what a friend would do after all. Of that, she had no doubt.

She took a slip of paper usually used to order and a moldy pencil, writing down a note only to slide it back to the holy girl with as much of a canine smile as she could muster.

Don't worry. Everything will be fine.

He wasn't looking, he most definitely and absolutely wasn't looking. How could he, he didn't even have any real eyes!! Much like a gentleman, his hand covered his face. But alas, they covered everything but the eyes.

He was definitely looking. Gotta marry her. Was all he could think.

Now his hand was really forced, he had no choice but to repay the favor.

"T-the loot is adequate, good job Nep!" He gave her a thumbs up before ruffling over her hair, acting like nothing happened despite his bleeding nose. Just how could an undead skeleton with a fake ghost body bleed exactly? Oh, the mysteries of the universe. He took the bag and poured a third in his hat before giving the rest to Nep.

"Here's your share, give some to Ellie too will ya?" He told her with a grin before taking a munch off his portion. Loot had to be shared evenly, that was an ironclad rule of piracy. Nothing more than that.

"Mhh, delish! *comp* Welp, time to fill my end of the bargain." He bowed  and set a small pile of grass alight before lifting the two and himself up with a fiery vortex, floating over an orb of flame until they managed to find a mostly spacious spot. With that out of the way, he drew his sword for the first time and planted it on the ground.

"Step back a little ladies. If you got any marshmallows, I suggest you take them out. This might be a little hot." He said before focusing his mana into waves of fire that circled his blade and raised up like many wings.

"A land of milk and honey eh? Whatevs, if it rocks your boat!" She corrected the foolish human. "Bah, all this philo crap reminded me I'm parched AND hungry. Here, just follow me. I've got a nice spot in mind."

The dog walked on all fours with her adorable stride before knocking on a strange metal door thrice. A small window opened, revealing a single massive eye.

"What's the password?" The grave, guttural voice behind it called out, barely drowned out by the laughter and the insults and all sorts of rowdy noises, some a little more joyful than others. The dog sighed and held her palm out as if to tell her companion to wait, almost like she repeated this routine a thousand times, before speaking up.

"La li lu le lo..."

The window shut immediately, but alas the door did not open. It didn't take long for the dog to realize what just happened and cry out in indignation, pounding on the door some more with her tiny dog paws.

"Oh come on! Don't tell me you changed it again!" She cried out. To which the cyclops responded: "Rules are rules, lady wolf!"

And the air around them turned dreary and cold, frigid even. The vampiric hound was outraged, nay, shocked at this mistreatment on her subject. To this, she could only respond in the most dignified and ruthlessly ladylike manner.

(Some things are better left unwritten, let's keep this pg-13. I'm not even going to bother.)

The door was open for a while already, and the dog's curses were drowned by the fat cyclop's booming laughter. His skin was green and mouldy, dripping with grease and unwashed sweat that littered its far too small shirt.

Rolls of fat and putrid wards grew on his body like a cancer, and his lips were rolled up and swollen like massive red worms, veined and pus ridden. His bald head shone, perhaps the only sightly part of the massive three meter mass of lard and laced muscle, but that was balanced out by its putrid and rotting teeth, curled into the most beaming of smiles.

"Hahahaha, I see, you've brought a fine looking one today eh wolf?" He laughed ruckously, giving the nun a honest and bright smile while waving at her, causing the dog to go right in front of Alicia and growl as if protecting her.

Seeing this mass of filth and unwashed might laugh joyfully at the minuscule and adorable dog was almost amusing in its own way.

"Woof woof!! Grrrrrrrr! Let's go Alice! It's on me." She puffed indignantly before walking into the dirty but welcoming tavern, greeting all the joyful monsters inside. Ah, not all of them were monsters though, the thing on the left was just a bowl of unfinished food.

"Bah! Boo~riiing." She whined, her idea was much better. She was sure she'd have fallen for it, tsk! But despite that, she was listening to her words and considering them seriously.

"That won't help. Don't you think you're putting the band aid on the wrong amputation? As long as humans live high up above, there's always going to be shit around these parts. Healing or listening to useless old worries won't help against the actual problem."

2667
Costin

The sight of the thing that appeared next to her sent chills down her spine. Did she know? No, there was no need to worry. As long as she was under her spell, there was no way she could be up to something. She was confident in her mystic eyes. She just passed out, it wouldn't be strange if she was just being cautious.

"Yeah, thanks." She nodded before walking along. "So, you were saying something about opening an ice cream shop?"

2668
Costin

"What could I be worried about!? Are you kidding me!? We're friends, of course I'd be worried if you just passed out on me, you silly silly girl!" Despite the anger, she couldn't help but sound relieved. Her tail wagged and she circled the nun. Somethings just don't change.

She jumped on her and latched on her cheeks, staring intensely at her eyes.

"Are you sure about that? You don't feel different? If you're tired, maybe you should sit down and rest a little." Then, she dropped down and wagged some more. "Gather your strength. I'll fetch you some food if you like, ask away! I'll let you know I can cook a mean steak sister!"

2669
Costin

"Wa-wahaaa! Oh gosh, it tickles, wahaha! ^u^ !!" She couldn't help herself as she was given a honest to god spa treatment, scratched in places she couldn't even reach or knew she could be touched in. This just felt wonderful, and in a place like this too! Honestly, she'd like to stay like this forever.

But suddenly, there was no soft fluffy fur or doggy noises. In an instant, there was nothing to scratch at, in fact, her hands weren't touching anything anymore. Too easy, with her guard lowered like this she managed to get the drop on her and close in on her range.

The naked lady was already past her when she delivered a quick karate chop to the back of her head on a pressure point, enough to knock out even the toughest of folks.

"It's perfect~☆"

She grabbed her hand before she could fall and smash her head on the ground. For a second, her eyes looked pitiful. Poor girl looked like a passed out bag of potatoes, and probably weighted about as much as one. She couldn't say she was proud of what she just did, honestly she wasn't fond of underhanded tactics to begin with, but this wasn't about feelings, but survival.

She didn't have a fulfilling meal in months, animals and vermin weren't enough to sustain her body. Even this form wasn't sustainable for more than a few minutes, you could even say she had come a hair close to starving herself. Without a powerful source of blood, she would eventually deteriorate and die. And that was the one thing she couldn't allow.

Had it been anyone else, she would have just decapitated her and gone on with her life, probably cracking a joke and laughing along the way. But she wouldn't do that, in fact she'd do her best not to hurt her. It wasn't much, but something she said rubbed her off the wrong way.

No matter how dark your path salvation is always possible. There is no evil too great, no sin too grave to deny redemption.

What a pile of rubbish. Would she honestly be able to say that to her face knowing what she was and what she did with joy in her heart? Heh, maybe she didn't want to find out. She hated her for saying that already, her words made her angry enough that she wanted to tear her apart and grind her to a pulp. And yet, all she could do was smile kindly.

"Hey, look pal, for whatever its worth, thank you." She told the passed out girl sweetly before lowering her on her knees, embracing the girl in cloth and taking a deep breath of the scent of incense running over her hair.

Without any hesitation, she brought her lips to her neck and pierced her soft skin with her teeth, salivating at the taste of blood she hadn't known for too long. She began to feed, slowly sucking drops worth at first, then taking longer and longer sips, grasping at the nun's body tightly.

But she didn't kill her. She bit her tongue a little and applied some of her blood on her wound, closing it as if nothing had happened in the first place. She was a lively one, she was honestly surprised. But with this much, she should be able to last a few more weeks. That was fine, she was okay with that. But she still had something to do.

She  slid her hand over her eyelids and opened her eyes, staring into them. Red and blue met, and despite her nonchalant expression and tone there was a pleading nature to her words.

"Please forget about that, okay?"

It wasn't sure how much time passed, though it could not have been a long while. Surely it wasn't, a familiar canine face was pressing over her and shaking her up, trying desperately to wake her up.

"Hey! Hey! Can you hear me!? Wake up dammit!" The dog was crying.

2670
Costin

The dog's tail wagged and her ears perked in pure happiness as she was catered and pandered to without restraint, letting her tongue loose in a most undignified doglike manner.

"A-arf! That's right, j-just a little bit lower. You're not bad at this! Ahhh... that's right, that's the spot. Mhhh..."

D-damn, damn it! Her mind was saying no, but her body was saying yes! She just couldn't help herself, these urges were too much for her to handle, and she was so good at this too. But she wouldn't throw away her pride just for a few scratches, no way! She had more dignity than that!

"M-moar!!" Was all she managed to blurt out in between pleased ecstatic doggo noises. "A-and don't look! It's embarassing, hmph!"

She ended up throwing her pride and dignity away for more scratches. How disgusting. But amusing.
