« That will be agreeable. » He told the maid bluntly. Suddenly, one of the puppets reached in a drawer and handed Molly an electronic device. With that, this concluded their business for today.

« We will keep in touch. For now, rest and recover to the best of your ability. I will be needing your assistance soon enough.»

Days later, the faithful maid would receive a message. Just as promised, she was given a task to perform at a certain location, though its exact whereabouts should come of no surprise by now. News of a coliseum's construction had already circulated.

"An associate of mine will be waiting for you there with further instructions. Make sure you are dressed to the best of your ability, and don't forget to bring it with you. "

Olga Marie

Olga sighed, really annoyed at how bad her lucked had turned out to be. Of course everybody she met didn't have particularly useful information and seemed to be a newcomer just the same as her. "Of course I'm stuck here, we already figured that much out. All I can do is pray that nothing too terrible is going on back home." Olga sounded worried and deeply disturbed by the possibility it wasn't. "The only good thing I can see about this is the opportunity to learn more about this place and about exotic magics."

Lorenzo

"Well, look at the bright side! If there's a place where you can start fresh, you won't find any better than here." He said with a confident wave of the hand as he showed off the entire city. Honestly, most people bitching about their home or whatever were either pussying out or straight up lying.

Being taken in the Nexus was the best thing that happened in his life in a long time. Like hell he'd be able to get someone so stuck up in their ways that they ran away from such a golden opportunity.

"Well, you know what, I got a deal for you. See, I'm kinda working part time here and surveying the city. It might take a while, but I wouldn't mind sharing my intel with you. Different locations, which places to avoid, quick routes.... yknow. Heck, I could map it for you, free of charge."

The pirate was just about getting to the interesting part when he was suddenly interrupted. He was so offended that he went out of his way to cross his arms and puff, pouting away. She was riding a giant bird of fire under the curtain of the night, all while listening to an epic and tragic tale. Couldn't she read the mood?!

"Hmph, rude. I told you, I don't know much about this place. Unless you're looking for a catalog of places to eat or drink, I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint."

The clouds were already passing them by, and entire streets could be looked at from up there. At the very least, there was a background to work with. But this time, his tone was much more solemn, grave. She probably wouldn't like what she was going to hear.

"You probably know the basics by now, this place has a bunch of folks from different places, worlds and even eras. Vampires, werewolves, mages, and thinks I don't even have a name for... It's pretty much a banquet of who is going to blow your face up first, and the drinks are expensive to boot. Does that sound like fun to you? Cause it sure as hell doesn't to, putting it simply, pretty much any sane lad out there. Well, I guess you'd have no problem dealing with most trouble, unless you're all talk and no walk. Oh and by the way you're stuck here."

The girls eagerness did nothing to lessen his suspicions. She must have been watching him prior, the sole question was since when. Perhaps he should verify her records on a later date.

He did not like this, the fact he knew so little, the fact he did not have all of this under control. But then again, there were very few things he could say he did like. But turning her into a puppet just yet would be wasteful. He'd play along for now, perhaps that alone was a warning in a way or another.

"That would be appreciated, I will keep that in mind. However..."

He held out his hand and something appeared over his palm. But what had once been a fabulous cape was now nothing more than a pile of cinders and burnt soot.

"..."

The burnt cloth slipped past his fingers and his shoulders dropped down. In fact, everything about his posture spoke of complete and utter defeat, there were no words he could even express to convey this.

Tin head...

"Life is simply unfair." He nodded in agreement to her statement, as if he had just heard a great and terrible tragedy. "It's pretty cute." He added, turning his attention to the dress.

"What if I set up an atelier for you?"

Vanguard

Hmp-!

It seemed he had misjudged her again. Good grief, subterfuge had never been his strong suit. He had hoped someone like her would be able to fill that gap in his stead, but it seemed he had been off his mark. But there was one thing above all else that he failed to understand, one detail that felt crucial to him. Despite his compromising position, his head tilted and he spoke with flat curiosity, a simple question that was an unshakable spear to shatter her very soul.

"Then what's with the costume?"

"There are no cameras in here. I dislike schemes, but if you have any thoughts of betraying me I suggest you forget them. They are the notions of a fool who doesn't realize her place. But you will not betray me, if that was your intention you would not have warned me."

His arm embraced her even tighter, by now their two bodies were completely pressed together, but despite his massive strength his grip pinned her precisely, with not a shred of unneeded force to cause her discomfort. Instead, he stroked her hair and uncovered her eyes, practically locking sight with them.

"Your nen category is irrelevant, I do not need to know everything in your subject to judge how bright you will shine. It is joy you seek? Then find joy as you serve me and my cause. I can promise you that you will find what you seek. After all, I am special too."

The skeleton was spinning his skull on his finger like a basketball, but her answer stopped him short, causing the skull to roll down his finger and fall only for him to immediately catch it and hold it tight in his hand.

"Honestly, I don't know much about this place. It's not my area of expertise, but I guess I can at least answer your questions."

Damnit, this was too rich. How was he even supposed to thank something like this properly? Even answering a thousand questions wouldn't repay the hope she just gave him. He waved his hand to the side, and practically spewed fire which just grew all over the place, burning plants and the ground until a considerable chunk of his surroundings were set ablaze into an inferno of his own making.

Suddenly, fires grew, shrank, twisted and coiled on the ground. His burning mana spun all around him before taking a shape which grew into a massive creature of flame and magic, life in its truest form.

The bird was massive, larger than any mere bunny or familiar, and it lost no complexity simply because of its size. The beautiful creature spread its mighty wings and the man grabbed his fallen hat before hopping on top of it without a care in the world. He was making room for little Olga in the back and tapping on the bird's back as if to urge her to come.

"You'd better sit down though, lass. Your legs might ache so badly by the time I'm done that you'll have to crawl your way out of here." He joked in good humor, his head just resting in his arm. It would be a long story after all, and such an old one too. More importantly, it's not every day that a burning skeleton offers you a ride on a giant bird of flame. "Oh, and can you pick up that hat for me?"

The skeleton did manage to stop at those words, not her question more than her prior statement. Hmph, how foolish. But he couldn't quite dislike it.

"Isn't it obvious?" He asked her while turning around. "I died." He answered, with words so grave that the fact they were so casual and nonchalant was somewhat more worrying than his appearance. For how could one who was murdered speak about this with such calmness?

And then, he punched his skull. Hard. Like he had just realized he made a terrible mistake.

"Argh, sorry, I don't mean to sound so grim. Honestly, no wonder I scare even the ugly ones away." He cursed to himself, but it was more than just the ladies or the like. The truth was he hated troubling them with such matters.

He didn't want to seem weak after all.

"Say, you're a mage too right? Is there a chance you could, you know..." He pulled his skull off his spine and tossed it in the air only to catch it, as if what he really meant to say was fix this.

"Heh. Well, thanks for the advice buddy." He said casually before giving her a friendly tap on the back.

"You don't look like a craven who wouldn't speak her mind, and you're beautiful as well. To tell the truth, I like ya. I'm pretty sure I'd be head over heels for you if I was still alive." He told her bluntly, the sort of confession that would take days if not months to muster up like it was the most unimportant thing in the world.

He sighed and slouched his shoulders down, like the weight of the world had suddenly become too much for him. He looked seriously bothered and down for a second there, like he just realized he had hit the jackpot of misfortune. Why did he have to be taken by that troublesome wannabe when there were so many finer mages around? Jeez...

"Man, this sucks. Looks like I got no luck with the ladies, eh? Well, anyways, I guess I'll be going now. Wouldn't want to disappoint my fans would I?"

He tipped his hat and waved adios before turning back and leaving.

Molly

"Eeeep."

The maid was pulled off her feet by an irresistible force and tumbled down on Vanguard's metallic frame. Her soft body seemed tiny in comparison to his when they were so close. A rush of excitement came over her for a brief moment and her cheeks flushed red.

"I-I'm not your slave. I refuse to help you unless you tell me what it is?" While she initially stammered from the surprise, it didn't diminish the indisputable fact of her burning glare of defiance that was challenging him.

Vanguard

"Everyone is a slave to something, be it money, love, duty, happiness or even fate. We are no exception." He told her solemnly before pulling her up, turning his own lap into a chair where she could sit.

His aura shifted and danced out of his frame once more, crawling in the air and forming words and sentences. There would be no evidence of this discussion, it seemed he knew better than to waste breath on such things. More than anything, he was wary of any way this conversation could be recorded and turn into evidence. No matter what, his plan would fall the moment it was exposed.

And so, he told her everything. At least, the things she needed to know.

"Do not mistake truth for flattery, I don't care what you think." He told her flatly, pulling her closer to him by the hand with the same massive strength as before. "If I wanted something out of you, I would not waste words of praise."

His eyes were intense, and his grip fierce, and yet he was as still and calm as a mountain, and his words were just as heavy. "To your people, this ability must be nothing but a trifle. To me, it is an object of interest, perhaps even a weapon I can use to further my ends. It is special. You are special."

"Interesting..."

His breath, if you could even call it as such, was cold and metallic. No, it couldn't be something like this, it had to be some sort of mistake. Breathing was a luxury solely reserved to the living.

His eyes shone brighter for a second. How ridiculous, for a second he almost thought she was a survivor. This skill of hers was eerily similar, but it wasn't unheard of. But the similarity, an opportunity like this would not come again, at least not in time.

He'd keep her close, perhaps the closest he'd have kept anyone as of yet. Valuable things should be kept under watch, and her abilities would prove very valuable.

He grabbed her hand and held it right in front of her face, his touch as cold as ice and his eyes burning like an inferno. She would be perfect.

"You are blessed with something incredible." He told her, his words echoing in the small room as something more than just wind, as something true and therefore beautiful. "You really are special. Tell me, what do you desire?"

Cossie

"W-woah! Seriously!?" She cried out as they accelerated.

And so she eventually lost the two, or perhaps she lost motivation.

She just landed on the ground and  tried to put her hand over her eyes like a binocular. Sometimes, life just wasn't fair.

Oh well. Maybe she'd just settle for Chinese.

Her ears perked back at that silly little display. Were they dumb? She gave them a chance to settle bad blood, but it seemed it fell on deaf ears. Poor idiots like that really deserved no mercy.

A bloody spike erupted from under her feet, dragging her up a dozen feet before she used the makeshift pole as a platform to leap even higher, reaching up to the two with incredible speed.

"Hey hey hey! I can't let you do that! I'm not that dumb, nooot happening!" She said while she pulled off this entire stunt with the most cheerful of smiles.

The bloody spike vanished, and once she landed another appeared. Rinse and repeat. It was unorthodox and  uncanny, but it seemed she could keep up quite nicely with the demon using that trick.

"Come on, I'm trying to be nice here, the least you can do is listen to what I have to say." She said while hopping over and over, her casual expression fully contrasting her incredible  movements.
