"No.  I won't stop being an asshole."

Roman's stare was intense.  He did not laugh along with her, instead just frowning at her.  "Whatever you want to call me, I won't ever stop being me.  "If being an asshole" is too much for you, then we don't have to be friends.  Your not a bad person, but your a fool if you think you can make real friends by pretending to be something your not.  I respected you from the day I met you, and I still do now.  You spilling your guts like this only makes me appreciate you more."

Roman sighed, folding his arms over his muscular chest.  "I don't think i've worked as hard as anyone worth anything, especially not you.  I only just started my journey the other day.  Every other attempt i've made to be strong has been half assed.  Effort is nice and all, and its a cute sentiment to have, makes everyone feel real nice, but at the end of the day results are what matter.  Power is power.  How you get it isn't important."

The young man thought back to his conversation with Yusho, thinking maybe how he used it was important.  Maybe it was about time he considered another possibility about the nature of strength, something far more important.  "Do... you think if you had more power it would help?  More influence, more strength, more love from the people around you?  More ability to achive whatever you wanted in life?  Do you think that getting more power would honestly make you happy?"

He wanted to know before he saw more.

At last Roman understood why she said what she did.  The idea of getting something engraved into your body to be a "real mage," was relatable.  In a way, thats ultimately why he took the vampirism so quickly.  He got to move from a human with nothing to a vampire of the night, a monster who treated humans like cattle.  The only true way to be someone was to step over another's body.  Leaning forward, he nodded.

"Yeah.  I want to feel what your feeling too.  Truth be told, I'd still rather be you.  I'd rather go through all of that trauma, just to exist as someone.  You can whine and whine about how hard you worked all day, but the fact of the matter is someone with true talent like you could never work as hard as someone like me.  A person who walks through life will never work as hard as someone who crawls."

Roman's eys scanned the room, wondering for the first time what these other vampire's lives were like.  Maybe they all had similar stories.  One thing had been made clear.  "We have a lot more in common than I thought," he said, sighing.  "....If you want you can look inside my mind too....  I don't mind.  I just would stay away from the hornier parts of my brain if you can."

Frowning, he said, "I think the strongest people in the world are those with talent who get through truama, the rest of us.... are losers."

He said that but he didn't really believe it.  Thats why he left his home to become strong after all, because he wanted to prove that "reality" wrong.

It was hard to listen to, not because of the severity of it, but because it hit so close to home.  Even so, he couldn't stop listening.  This sort of traumatic backstory, it wasn't something he was a stranger to.  Quite frankly, the citizens of the nexus were no strangers to some form of trauma.  It was the fact that it came from a person like Sakura, so powerful, someone who seemed to have at least most of it figured out.

Roman's eyes widened and he spoke with a soft voice.  "Slow down.... You.... I want to know, but you don't have to tell me anymore if you don't want to."

He didn't understand all of it yet.  It was too incoherent.  Her sister Rin leaving for the airport?  Her weak parents?  Was it the pain of being abandoned that set her off or the sister...?  Yeah it was the abandonment wasn't it?  She was hurt by the people closest to her.

"But... I do want to know...."

Aruna

After a battle like this, the soothing presence of the angel combined with the deescalating adrenaline created a sense of peace.  This was the first time she had ever killed so many angels.  Even weak ones like that in her world were impossibly strong.  When she first arrived in the city, she would not have survived such a battle but now...

"Ah!" A moan was forced out of her lips as Aruna felt Lulu's soft hand grasp her huge ass cheek.  It was still in the more exaderated female form she took to attempt to manipulate Orcus.  Soft but firm breasts and butt, a lean back with light feminine muscle, a tight stomach, long legs that jiggled slightly with the extra feminine fat it carried.  It was a valnurable form that appealed to that sort of gentlemanly human ego.  Perhaps that is why it didn't work on the nonhuman.

ARuna slapped away Lulu's hands.  "Hold on for a mere moment Lulu!" she yelped, turning to Meal.  "i will see you another time.  Know that i'll still be thinking of you, even in future battles.  So please try to find some sort of balance.  Hatred alone will not create a better world, even for you."

The dark angel glared at Lulu.  Her cheeks were becoming redder and redder by the second.  "If you must do this, take us home!"

Huh... oddly self aware...  Thats what Roman thought as he rested his chin in against the palm of his hand.  Roman frowned, staring at Sakura's shapely legs.  Maybe then money wasn't the kind of power he wanted.  Looking at that attractive body she got just from training, maybe the benefits of physical power were better.  After all, doesn't it give you more confidence in yourself or something like that?  Plus in this city, if your strong enough, you can just take the power for yourself.  Growing up, he always heard about districts occasionally being taken over by groups of strong individuals.

"I see.  Then what about your training?  No its alright.  Tell me about that when you get to it."

Aruna

An explosion of light.  As Aruna sunk into fireworks of the battle, she stared at the anguish of the angels, the look of horror on their face.  There was something about watching another creature die that felt immediately relatable.  The thought of dying itself was enough to numb the brain, but watching it happen stimulated the brain in a completely different way.  It was this rush of power and victory, tinged with the sharp anxiety that came with the reminder that death could come for her at anytime.

And then nothing.

It was like having two pillows block out her eyesight, the soft but familiar feeling of Lulu's giant breasts in her face.  With the threat gone, it was hard to resist the urge to sleep, but she found herself rejuvenated.  The wounds inside her body began healing, the bruises fading.  Aruna's skin returned to a soft but sheen white, not an ounce of purple in sight.
 
"Thank you," she said, her words muffled by Lulu's breasts.  It was easier to give compliments when you can't hear a person well.  What she wanted to tell Lulu was that she hid her abilities from her opponents, avoiding going all out unless she was sure they would be dead to avoid becoming vulnerable to them later.  "I... just didn't want to show you my weakness. To tell you the truth, I was struggling with controlling it.  Although I am not sure if I can promise that anymore.  I feel this problem has become a bit bigger than me."

Roman watched Sakura do her magic with wide eyes.  He wondered how long it took to be able to cast magic like that.  Still, if it did what she said it did, then she was being disingenuous.  She said she didn't care, yet she casted a spell to prevent others from hearing their conversation.  At the very least, Roman considered that maybe it wasn't wrong after all to feel so defensive when they first met.  She wasn't very honest with herself.  But then again, maybe it was better to judge after he heard her out.  After all, she was opening up to him now.

"All in the past huh?" he said, echoing her words.  As he spoke, he sat his tinier ass in the chair opposite to hers.  "Does having all that power allow you to put the past behind you?  I always wondered about that.  People who made it never seem to care much about the past, or at least don't bring it up."

"Your the one who said date," he said with a shrug.  "I've gotten a little too much action recently to complain."

And with that, he started walking towards a nearby cafe.


The door swung open, a bell ringing.  A well dressed man and woman with flight attendant like uniforms stood on the other side of a counter opposite to the door.  The room had a multi polygon shape, with the center being a rectangle with tables, separated by the triangle that was the counter and kitchen.  Vampire citizens sat at tables talking.  It was a normal scene discounting the water tainted with the slight tint of red in a few of the glasses.

"I almost hate how ordinary this place is," he said, looking around the room.  "Are you sure your alright with talking about something so personal here?  You know everyone has super hearing right?"

Aruna

Heaven in hell what is that?

All her spikes were rendered useless against the creatures.  Antimagic made her weapons nothing.  Reaching the apex of the climb into the sky, Aruna understood the only option left just as Lulu articulated it with her words.

"Balance ain't gonna save us here, what we need is one decisive strike to their heart before... before more of them spawn."

Indeed that was true.  The drive to move forward, the power to push forward.  The raw power of the spirit.  Thats what guided these creatures.  There was no sentience, no life.  "Mindless beasts that seek only to desire and grow?  That just makes them human."

Well thats what she thought before she met him.  Maybe what makes a human so terrifying is their ability to really consider how they are evolving.  Still holding the blade of darkness in her hand, the weapon glowed with light, doubling in size and power.  It shifted into a Lance just as Aruna's wings shrunk back into her body.  She fell into the earth, arms spread wide as she twirled the lance in her hand.  Tightening her grip, the tip of the Lance pointed towards her target.  With one swift throw it plunged into the earth towards the core of the cannon.

"Incinerate in heaven you foolish angels!  Cling to power and you will exist only to be destroyed by a greater one!"

Thats right.  She didn't care that they weren't listening, as long as the possibility of them hearing her existed.  No, even if it didn't it had to be said, even if it was just for Aruna's sake.

"Same reason your still chasing it probably," he said, following her gaze to her chest.  "Power.  I think there was some old proverb like, you attract people similar to yourself....  I don't think thats a true one.  I used to think what your saying too, that whole thing about it being harder to find genuine people at the top, but I think someone at the top isn't necessarily disingenuous, but that they don't always waste their personality on everyone they meet.  Like... Valarie is at the top but I don't think she was being disingenuous with me."

His master was at the top of something, or at least more like Sakura and he wasn't disingenuous either.

Roman sighed.  "So... what did you have to do to gain power then?"

What?

Aruna's eyes lowered, turning towards the injured angels unwilling to back down from her attacks.  They were a nuisance but they weren't the big problem right now.  No, the bigger issue was that the haze she casted enhanced not only her allies but her enemies, effectively making the move pointless.  The demon girl's head turned towards the bright light then..

Nothing.

The angels who defied god were seemingly wiped from existence.  Although that wasn't the entire truth.  Aruna had cast the coat of shadows on herself making her completely undetectable by typical sensory methods.  The darkness enveloping Lulu and Mael shielded them from the eyes of their opponents, turning them completely invisible.  The only question was, would the other angel's be shrouded as well?

As Aruna flew upwards, spikes emerged from the sky, threatening to slice up the angel's that followed.  A voice rang through the sky.  "Yes thats right!  Every angel can achieve balance!  In accepting the darkness, you drones become demons!"

Hundreds of chains reached out to the angels in the sky, threatening to latch onto them.  If caught, the chains would steal their magic.  First the haze would be removed.  Then Lulu's delicious magic would be drunken.  Next the light they cling to so pathetically will be sapped from their very being.  Their final hour will be defined by the feeling of their very lifeforce fueling Aruna's magic.

Roman felt a strange pit in his chest, a feeling of absolute defeat.  Maybe thats why he laughed.  "Funny.  Everyone else has been telling me the exact opposite.  Valarie, Yusho, Emilia.... they are all telling me I have to be kind to get real strength.  But from my perspective, all the strongest most respected people in the world are assholes.  Thanks... i've been going crazy thinking maybe I was wrong this whole time."
