The survivors
"Ugh. What happened?" A man groaned and woke up like many others. His head hurt like hell, and everything felt hazy. He could remember the smell of death, the freezing waters, and the beast's screams tearing everyone apart.
And... being eaten?
He gasped and looked at his body, felt his chest up. He was fine? But how?
"Woah! Hey, look at this!" He heard a voice, and turned to look around. A man was laughing jovially surrounded by dozens of people. These faces... agh, they looked familiar. Could it be they were all the ones who had fallen in that flood? "Bwahahahah! This is amazing!" The familiar voice boomed in laughter as he lifted the car with his bare hands. Right, they were all... normal. Weak humans. So how?
"And I can shoot beams from my hand!" Laughter and joy rung despite the gravity of the situation. "Look, dad! I can fly!" A child, like many others, spread their wings and played happily, no different than angels.
How could it be that all these normal people now had powers? And how could they just laugh everything that just happen like that? He groaned in confusion and got up, and kicked the ground a little. Yeah, no super strength there.
"Roy!" A tight hug startled him into a blush. It was a voice he knew too well, which belonged to his sweetheart. "A-anna... you're alive?"
Save me! It hurts! It hurtsithurtsithurts!
No, he remembered. He couldn't forget, even if he wanted to, but at that moment it didn't matter. He turned to meet the one he failed to protect, and hugged her with all his strength. If he could figure out what his power was, he would never fail her again.
"It was no coincidence. It is a gift, given to the chosen by God." A jovial voice, almost the one of a preacher, rang behind everyone. A woman walked forward, surrounded by a dozen of armored men with guns, likely soldiers. The woman was tall, and fancied a simple attire. But most striking were her eyes, of a deep black color that almost drew you into their emptiness like an abyss.
"My name is Alice, and I have seen him, as have you. The savior who pulled us all from the jaws of death." She smiled and bowed courteously, hiding her sorrowful eyes with a kindhearted expression. "I am sorry for your losses. It is a cruel reality that not all of you could be saved. But that is why we... he fights. Look around."
"This was once a gang hideout for a powerful criminal ring that enslaved people based on their race and ethnicity. It is now nothing more than a ruin. Today, many similar dens of sin have fallen, all to the bright star that freed all those who were unable to defend themselves." As she talked, she summoned flowers of green flame from her fingertips, to show that even she had been given a strange power. An armored man came forward and waved at the many survivors.
"Rejoice, my brothers and sisters. We have been saved. We will not suffer because of those who rule with their powers again. The field can be evened as long as you believe." And with that, the men brought food, drinks and there was much merriment. For once in their life, these unfortunate souls had been given a life of plenty, and the power that oppressed them was now right at their fingertips.
