EMIYA SHIROU

Shirou watched the priest walk in a circle around him with trepidation. The sight reminded him too much of the first time he had met Kotomine Kirei in that awful church back in Fuyuki. His plan to steal the clothes of some guards struck him as cliche, but that didn’t necessarily mean it was a bad idea.

Then Darcy asked about his magic. Shirou frowned, debating what he should reveal. Magic was something every magus was intensely secretive about, and while he himself wasn’t like the average magus, he liked to keep his cards close to his chest.

“In layman’s terms, I can make swords - powerful swords - and shoot them at people. It probably sounds rather strange, but it’s true,” the freelancer said, deciding to be honest but vague. “In case we do encounter dragons, or Shendu himself, I can make swords designed to kill dragons, too. But what about you? What are you capable of?”

Tailing someone - and spotting a tail - was different in the city than out in the woods, and although it was impossible to hear it now, a wolf, especially one so large, was pretty conspicuous in this concrete jungle. Even traveling by rooftop as they were, making careful use of an extra eye or two from the back ensured the apostate managed to mostly keep track of his pursuers. Since Fiona was riding said wolf, the animal was probably the same deer/dragon/shapeshifting thing she was traveling with before. Something must have made them suspicious of Brigida… the animal’s keen sense of smell, perhaps.

Well, whatever. They weren’t trying to attack him or anything, and Fiona had seemed quite interested in helping out, so for the moment the mage saw no reason to deal with them.

The bald elf made his way to the park where Morgan had nearly been captured. The plaza still bore the scars of the battle that had taken place, the stone and earth heavily pitted. An unshaven man in his twenties with long brown hair and a pair of glasses sat on one of the benches, looking bummed.

“Devin,” Solas said, addressing him. “I take it nothing of note has occurred?”

“No,” the other man said, annoyed. “Hey, boss, did you really have to pull me? I was in the middle of a date-”

An unsympathetic look from Solas cut him off. “Call the others and tell them that when they’re on shift here, to look out for a young woman in a red coat who’s name is Fiona. If she comes here, don’t shoo her away like you normally would. Contact me, and I’ll deal with it from there.”

“Yeah, ok,” the other man said, looking unsatisfied but unwilling to risk being disrespectful. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees and chin in his hands, wallowing in his misfortune. Solas, meanwhile, took his leave. It was time he finished recovering himself… discreetly.

“Yes. The longer this takes, the less likely we’ll find her alive,” Shirou said, a pained look on his face. He’d been trying his best to focus on moving forward so he didn’t have to think about what could be happening to Mia. Unfortunately, Darcy’s question brought those very unwelcome thoughts to the forefront.

“Like I said before, this is extremely dangerous,” he said, grateful, at least, that the clergyman was taking this seriously. “We can take some time to scout and prepare, if you’re still willing to help, but I intend to get inside by nightfall.”

Although now that he thought about it, it would be quite useful to have people who can go where he couldn’t. Rin was in the Nexus, but she was with Sakura, and they hadn’t parted on particularly good terms. Saber, however, may just be willing to help him out. She may not be the best at discretion, but her abilities in combat were undeniable. She would be useful as backup if a subtle infiltration went south.

“I see what you’re saying,” Shirou said with a nod. “But it’s too risky for me to just walk in like I belong there. I’m too recognizable, and Shendu’s seen me before. If you want to scout the inside, you’ll have to do it alone.”

SOLAS

He was being followed.

The elven apostate mage was surprised he hadn’t noticed until now, but something or someone was tracking him, keeping out of sight and avoiding making noise. They were good at it too, he was almost to the city already and only just now picked up on it. Was it Fiona and her pet/companion? He couldn’t tell, being upwind and unable to pick up their scent.

Oh well, it didn’t matter. It was quite unlikely whoever it was was expecting him, and even then, losing a tail once in the city would be a breeze. Solas continued his jog, seeming for all the world oblivious.

Shirou had hoped Darcy would take the hint, but the man was quite persistent. The freelancer gave him a hard stare for a few moments, then sighed, and walked out the door while motioning for the priest to follow.

"Alright. If Shendu really does have other dragons guarding his palace, we need to scope it out before going in. I can do that from a high vantage point. How familiar are you with the asian district?"

Darcy Hugh

Darcy smiled smugly at the girl before bursting into laughter. Quite the feisty one… and yet she still didn’t get it.

“HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW!! I see you both don’t understand a thing. Very well, let me enlighten you!!”

A blazing starfire lit in his eyes, manly passion that none could subdue. He posed dramatically and roared in defiance to the girl’s accusations with a blazing fire.

“YES, I AM A PERVERT!! WHEREVER THERE ARE PANTIES I WILL APPEAR!! BUT BEFORE THAT, I AM A MAN OF GOD!! AND AS A MAN, I CANNOT TOLERATE THAT A CREATURE SO VILE AND HEATHEN WOULD ENDANGER A DARLING, NOR CAN I IGNORE A PLEA FOR HELP!! BE IT BIG GIRLS, LITTLE GIRLS, SISTERS, NIECES, COUSINS, WIVES, WIDOWS, NUNS OR CELIBATES… I WILL SHIELD THEM WITH MY OWN BODY IF I MUST!!!! IT IS MY DUTY, NAY, MY CALLING TO PROTECT ALL CUTE GIRLS IN THIS CITY NO MATTER WHAT!! I SIMPLY CANNOT TOLERATE SUCH AN UNGODLY THING, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!”

Well, he didn't lie.

EMIYA SHIROU

Shirou stared at the priest with wide eyes as he launched into a truly epic speech, complete with posing and hand guestures. In all the time spent working with the Church, he had never met a clergyman like him. Mitsuba apparently finally had enough, and left in a huff.

“Right. Well, it’s kind of you to offer, but dealing with Shendu will require… subtlety,” Shirou said cautiously, trying to think of a way to turn him down without insulting him. “I’m not sure if this is a good idea.”

BRIGIDA DOENCA

The older woman nodded at Fiona, a disappointed look on her face. She appeared to be close with the dragon, so it was quite likely that it would act to defend the woman in red. Fighting such a great serpent while having not yet fully recovered from the previous night’s catastrophe was far from ideal, but at the same time, could she risk letting her go?

“That’s unfortunate, but not truly unexpected, I suppose,” Brigida said, taking out a notebook and pen, scribbling down the address to the park where Mordred had almost been captured before tearing the page off and handing it to Fiona. “When you’re ready, head here. I always have someone there 24/7, so don’t worry about regular business hours.” To her own surprise, she gave the other woman a warm smile. “I hope you won’t make me wait too long.”

At that, she turned and started making her way back to Nexus city. She blamed her own personality for allowing this, only halfheartedly wishing she was someone more ruthless.

“You’re sure?” He asked the priest, a skeptical look on his face. “You’re not going to try to find Forest?”

Before Darcy had a chance to answer, Mitsuba chewed him out. Shirou couldn’t decide if their mutual irritation was actual hate or if they were tsundere as fuck. Either way, he could definitely live without the distraction.

“I appreciate the thought, but I can handle myself. You don’t have to look out for me.”

EMIYA SHIROU

Shirou was at the door when a not-so-asleep Darcy suddenly called out for him to wait. Had the man only been pretending to be asleep? He couldn’t imagine why the priest would feel the need, but he stopped and turned to him regardless.

Shirou made a sound of mild surprise. Shendu was at that old temple? He had seen it before - it was hard to miss, really - but he hadn’t thought much of it at the time. He certainly hadn’t seen any dragons around there.

“Thanks for your help, and good luck to you both as well. Forest can be hard to find.” With that, the freelancer stood up from the table, left his payment on the table by his plate, and strode out the door.

Shirou frowned at Mitsuba’s description of the person she was looking for. Nexus city was massive, and didn’t run short of “vigilantes”, good and bad. There could be several people who fit that description. That said, there was only one person he knew of who fit the bill.

“I do know of one person it could be. Her name is Forest, and she’s a vampire,” he said, trying to hide an uneasy expression by sipping his green tea. “I can’t tell you if it’s really her, but she’s the only person I know it could be.”

Shirou hadn’t seen the vampire since they parted ways after he reunited with Saber. He still didn’t get her at all, she was a vampire, but didn’t seem much like the Dead Apostles he had fought back in his own world. Then his mind shifted to what had happened after their fight on the rooftop, and he couldn’t will away the light pink that dusted his cheeks.

Shirou sat down beside Mitsuba, briefly scanning the menu before deciding to go with a chicken ramen stir fry. Darcy sat on the far side of the table and promptly set his head down in an effort to sleep. The tension between the two was palpable, and the freelance magus couldn’t help but wonder what reason the two would have that made them stick around each other.

“So, what was it you wanted to know?” He asked while handing the menu to their server. It must be quite a bit, if she expected it to take the whole meal.

BRIGIDA DOENCA

“Yes, you can,” the language instructor said with a smile. “I don’t know how, but these plants of yours, you are bringing them here from another world, are you not? Even if your power can’t be used to get us home, simply studying how you make it happen can open up all kinds of possibilities for us!” She said with an enthusiastic glint in her eye, the same way she once had when students questioned her about the more intricate parts of Portuguese expressions.

She would have continued her spiel, but was interrupted by a truly epic snort from the deer. Brigida sent the animal an annoyed look, and it responded by transforming itself in a rather gruesome manner into a fucking dragon.

“Céus!” She murmured under her breath as the serpent roared, reflexively spreading her feet and raising her arms in anticipation of combat. To her relief and mild surprise, the dragon merely laid down in the grass, staring intently. The two stared at each other for a couple seconds, then the language instructor blinked and relaxed.

“Ah, I hope I didn’t antagonize your… dragon… whatever it is. He’s not going to try to eat me, is he?”

EMIYA SHIROU

“Anywhere you like, as long as it’s not expensive,” he said in reply. He wasn’t familiar with most restaurant chains, having never had much interest in eating out, even when he was young.

BRIGIDA DOENCA

“Oh, I’m fine, dear,” the language instructor said, waving her hand in front of her in dismissal of the other woman’s question. “A bit bruised, but nothing permanent.”

It was as close to confirmed as it was going to get: this woman was what she had been looking for. Judging by the power that deer had displayed earlier, violence was to be avoided if possible. It was lucky that Brigida had a relatively friendly personality.

“My name is Brigida,” she said, sounding out her name slowly like she always did when she wasn’t back home in Portugal. “I was actually out here looking for you. Well, not you exactly, but whatever was doing what you’re doing with those plants. See, my colleagues and I have been looking for a way back home from the Nexus, and we have reason to believe you can help. I’d appreciate it very much if you came with me to where we’re operating.”

Unspoken was the fact that she had no intention of giving the woman in red a choice in the matter.

Apparently the two didn’t think he was good enough at english to follow their conversation. Well, okay, he didn’t understand everything they said, but enough to get that Mitsuba was determined to mine him for information, and that Darcy expected her to give him what he wanted for free. It was honestly rather pointless, he was willing to share what he knew with them, but he decided to not interrupt their conversation lest he appear rude.

“Sure, that’s fine,” he said in response to both of their questions. He didn’t mind bars or the occasional drink. Hopefully they could trade information and then go their separate ways without any complications.

BRIGIDA DOENCA

The woman blamed her mount for the accident, to which the language instructor pursed her lips in a skeptical frown. All that was forgotten, however, when the lady in red dismounted the stag and the plants that had grown up so quickly now moved to the side so as to not get in her way. Brigida sent her an appraising glance.

“Those plants… are they yours?” She asked the lady in red. If she was lucky, she wouldn’t even need to force the woman to come back with her.

Mitsuba was less than impressed and began to tell him off, but the priest intervened and said something to her about sweets in english that the archer didn’t quite catch. Darcy then turned to him and apologized for the earlier jab, and declared his willingness to help, even attempting to rope Mitsuba in as well. Shirou blinked in mild surprise, it was rare that someone was so willing to help him out, especially a clergyman.

“That is a generous offer, holy man, but I can’t ask you to join me. Just telling me where I can go will be help enough,” Shirou said, hoping Darcy didn’t take exception to his refusal.
