David Borrus

David listened quietly as Vanguard told his tale, nodding occasionally to ensure the speaker that he was still listening.  This was so interesting to him, a person who lived since the dawn of time.  There were so many questions he wanted to ask but he was a therapist not a historian and besides, listing to how this man thought was far more interesting.  His tale was somber, but encouraging, much like those older legends made to inspire children while teaching them the ways of the world.

David thought for a second, thinking about all that the lost warrior had told him.  Then he spoke.  "Well I am a therapist not a miracle worker, so I can't fix your problems for you but I can tell you my interpretation.  You have lived a long time Vanguard.  You will continue to live not only for yourself but for the legacy of your people.  You are not just a warrior but perhaps the greatest potential teacher that history has ever known, able to pass down the wisdom of old.  I have had patients like you, who have looked in the eyes of someone younger and became depressed because they saw themselves in the young.  It is important that you reflect on these moments.  Tell me Vanguard.  Was it inspiring, scary or self reflective?  Was it the thought that your own inner light was fading or was it that her own light perhaps?  You have always stood strong.  Why now? Why her?""

Caedia

The Arisen cocked her head at the building. It wasn't much stranger to her than the other examples of bizarre building choices that the city held. She silently walked towards the building but paused in her walk when she saw a woman dressed in dark armor standing next to girl with red eyes and white hair.

The sight of armor was a bit nostalgic for Caedia but she didn't lower her guard in the slightest. This person was well equipped and didn't seem encumbered at all even with the armor that should at least be a bit strenuous to wear. And the lack of scars meant that she was either as green as grass or skilled enough to avoid too much damage to the face.

Regardless Caedia did believe the woman was due some respect. It is easy to try and blend in and become part of a mass of people that weren't you. With that in mind she walked over to the duo and held her hand out to the armored woman. "Caedia."

PARIAH

The mercury pierced the arms with ease but they were not impaired in the slightest. With another echoing giggle the hands extended and latched onto Kayneth before pulling him through the weakened floor straight into the pith black hallway below. Hardened biomass had covered the windows leaving only the hole which he had been pulled through as a source of light.

Urthemiel

The dragon slowly rose from its position as he saw a humanoid with purple hair. He quickly took off and sped towards the group as the blob changed shape into a relatively handsome man. Urthemiel slammed into the ground behind the two woman shattering the ground beneath his magnificent self before he glowed brightly and changed back into a human.

The Old God gave the transformed monstrosity a glare and summoned a wall of fire in front of the false one in warning before turning his head to face the woman with purple hair. "Your hair, is it natural? I haven't seen such a magnificent shade of color for hair in ages, and that was artificial."

Aisha

The motherly woman's voice slowly trailed off after the hacking coughs of the choking Child. One of her hands busied itself with running through the small Child's hair as she surveyed those before her. The elder Child was old but there was strength in him. Her eyes glazed over the average one and focused on the one with slightly pointy ears. one of the Knowing Children? Perhaps, but his ears were not quite sharp enough however the smell of the wilds clung to him and Aisha nodded her head towards him with what seemed like approval.

Then her eyes focused and narrowed at one of the ones farther away. Near a contraption of metal that Aisha had seen other ride. He appeared to be one of hers but she knew, instinctively, that he was not. That he did not belong to her. This time she spoke the First Tongue with a degree of anger, and the noisy chittering of insects and the low growls of beasts followed her voice. She raised a single finger to point at him.

"You. You are not one of mine own. What is your purpose here. Why hide within the skin of man, pretender?"

Vanguard

Vanguard laughed at David's remark on his own tale. Then, he rested his great metal hand on his shoulder and shook his head.

"Child, strength is not to simply be able to crush all in your path. It is to be unmovable, unshakable. A mountain is strong, the ocean is strong. But me? I am not strong. I merely believed to be a lion, where all it took was a push for this image to crumble. For one to fall such as myself,  cannot be strong. I can perhaps teach, but only what I have learned. And if what I have come to learn until now was wrong all along, it would be I who ought to be taught." said Vanguard. Then, he looked at him right in the eye and answered.

"I was afraid. Not of her, but of what I have become. For a second, for that one second, I realized just what I had done. It was no different than what the gods had made me suffer, no different than what I loathed. And yet, it was so easy. Crushing her would have not bore more trouble than to snap a twig. It was fear. I fear, David. I fear that I have turned into something I cannot forgive. And I am afraid of what these hands of mine can do."

"You know, there is a misconception that tells time as a linear flow. It is wrong. For one, time is instantaneous, yet eternal. You can say that the moment of yesterday happened an infinity of times, and will happen an infinity of times tomorrow as it is happening now. Think of it as a cycle, one that ends where it begins constantly. There is truly no beginning or end, but a single point where all is nothing. That is time.

The point is, history has the funny tendency to repeat itself, no matter how many times. In a near infinite amount of time, there is the possibility there will be two beings alike us who will meet in the same circumstances, only to engage in this very conversation. What I mean is simple: in that instant, I saw my own glimmer in her own. Compared to her, I was unsightly, like those wretched deities from above. If that is true, my path has been but one of self destruction. I seek to end this, but I do not wish to die doing so. What I seek is change. Nothing more, nothing less." said Vanguard.

Noel

Noel meekly sat down in front of Tar and began leafing through it. “Oh wow-” She nodded. “This is bad.” After a while she finally finished going through it and put it down. “So what are we going to do about it, if we have no idea who or what did it?” She asked him. “And how do I fit into it?”

David

David's face stayed neutral throughout his speech.  He was completely focused on the words of the warrior, analyzing it.

"I see.  So you fear becoming too powerful, your own existence has begun to contradict itself even.  By seeing yourself in this woman, and looking from a similar eye that the gods once did, you fear the destruction of your own beliefs...."  He paused once again, taking in the information Vanguard gave when talking about time.

"So time is a cycle, un-breaking and unchanging.  However, you wish to change this, somehow, even at the cost of your own life.   Allthough, as you have just discovered you are still stuck in this cycle, leading to your dilemma.  Im no expert on these things but that just sounds like you haven't solved the problem yet, not that it will never be solved.  Tell me, what would you say to your younger self if you could talk to him?"

Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald

The mercury had taken the full brunt of the fall as Kayneth landed on his feet. In the darkness of the hallway he knew that whatever this thing was it was trying to hunt down, but was willing to take its time doing so.

Darkness itself was no obstacle to a high ranked magus such as himself, his eyes were reinforced to detect even the tiniest amount of light, combined with the reflective surface of the still outstretched silver mercury he could still see.

'So this beast can be pierced?'
He was unaware of the amount of damage he could do but it was better than nothing.

"How dare you treat me like some mangy dog to be tossed around. This insult cannot go unpunished!"

In quick succession Kayneth launched an offensive. A second strand of silver emerged from his other sleeve and quickly gathered into a small sphere with the other stand following suit.

"Calor!"

The mercury then began to heat up rapidly as a dull reddish glow began to reveal itself from within the spheres.

"Suplex Vulnus!"

Using the rapidly heated charge the mercury spheres shot off towards opposites walls of the hallway, like a cannon shot they would use heat and blunt force in an attempt to create an opening though the dense wall of biomass.

Tar

Henry looked up from his coffee (he told himself he really didn't need another coffee, it was the fourth this morning but the damn machine in the station made it about 80% more dilluted than his coffee machine) towards Noel. Quickly munching down the rest of his donut, he swallowed and answered as he leaned back in his chair, "We're going down to the sewers to track this thing down. Might be some sort of ravenous mutant or magical monster."

He righted himself then with a serious expression and leaned over the desk, closer to Noel.

"And we are going to stop it. Before it decides it needs to kill even more people in the same brutal fashion," Henry explained, and his face momentarily grew less tense. "And you're going to be our armed escort. Seeing as we don't know what we might be dealing with here, more firepower can't hurt."

The detective reached for another donut, internally musing how the girl's composure had improved drastically once confronted with the facts of the problem. Mid movement, his hand froze consciously when he heard the door to the offices open and he recognized who had just come in. Saber. Except she wasn't alone, being accompanied by who, judging by the very imposing black armor and brooding look on his face, the unchained surmised might have been the friend she had recently found and spoken of before.

He wasn't sure why he was here with her, but he wondered if he was just as much of a superhuman as she was. Closing his donut box as they approached, he got up with a frown, staring Saber in the eye.

"I was expecting you earlier. Had some trouble?" He asked. Henry looked over them carefully as his eyes strayed over their postures and up to the black knight's face.

Sarse

Sarse was startled when the older man also listening to the song of the woman of life incarnate started choking on his food. Though he appeared to deal with it fine, the angel made to approach out of polite concern regardless, but was stopped. The woman's sudden inquiry and the biting sounds at the edge of her words caused him to hesitate.

He scowled slightly, uncertain, at her statements. Her name entered his mind, t̜͚̳h̔͗̿̏̈̀̏e͈̫̩̣̜͊̎̃ͨ̂̔ ͨ̉̀Ḫ̫͖̱̮̯̔̍ͣͯͭe͚̜̣̤͉̫͓͌̽ͯͬ͌ͨ̚a̾ͬ̌͒͊ͬ̐r͎͚̼̗̝̪͗ͅt̰̭͍̳͈̅́ͬͪ̏̚ͅ ͉̠͚̪̰̒̊ő̙ͩͩ͂̔f̔̃͛̍͆̇ ͚̝̼͖̖G̲͚̩ͦ͑ͩ̓ͤȏ̲͚ͯ̐ͩdͥͩͨ̽͒, and Sarse almost recoiled internally. The seraph did not comprehend what it signified, or what she meant by "her own" - though he had a feeling, in some ways helped by the tales her song told, that she might have been even beyond the word-bound of Life - and the implication she laid towards his body was immediately uncomfortable. It was but a shell in which a celestial like him could mingle among men, true, but he considered it a part of his self in the physical universe. And was the skin still not a part of the body? A major one, in fact.

Sarse could have dodged her question. Protocol and caution certainly told him to do so, but in this mystical city, he was unsure of how much following protocol would help him - or it - and Than'Sanel as well as others were nearby. So, confused by her nature as though he may have been, he answered truthfully.

"I walk in this earthly vessel because my true form is not meant for the world of mortals," he said, voice somber and honest. "Does this mean of consideration for all that is around us offend you in some way?"

Gintoki

He still observed. He ignored the old guy choking on food, since after all, when you are old you can croak in any moment, even in such embarassing way. Well, the old guy didn't die, but that's beside the point.

The woman stopped singing her song and then asked with audible irritation some dude on a bike, calling him a pretender or something. Then the dude replied about walking in some "earthly vessel". Maybe cosplaying humans caught among Amanto? Or was he some tourist who didn't want to attract too much attention with his true form? Anyway, giving the dude hard time because she seen through his disguise was not really nice.

Gintoki made his presence known, coming closer. "Hey, it's his business if he wants to look like a human. Just because it's the country of humans doesn't mean we should be rude to tourists. He doesn't look like bent on world domination and he is not looking down on us, so don't give him a hard time." he said, trying to defuse any tension as best as he could"Don't mind her, Amanto-san. She must be from countryside and not as used to visitors as the city folk"  After all, someone walking barefoot must have been poor even in comparison to some hobos in Edo. A street artist of sorts that left her village in search for better future?

Vanguard

“I… “

It was strange. The idea of his fight not having ended after all had been inconceivable until now. He had never even considered it. Could it be that this city, this Nexus, had called him not to save his world, but to save itself? No, impossible. There was but one explanation for it…

“I don’t know.” Said the warrior as he lowered his head. He was thinking about it. Truly, he knew not if he could change anything, or if there was anything worth changing. But there was something. Then, he nodded and came to an understanding.

He was here, not because of fate, but because he had a duty to finish. He had not protected the citadel until his final breath, so his breath was taken from him. But the power to protect, the strength of a man, was something he still possessed. Knowing that, was it worth changing anything?
Maybe here, maybe then, he could find salvation. His path had been the mistaken one. It was bitterly funny. The city had saved him after all. And now, he could only chuckle in understanding.

He had a debt to repay.

“There is one thing. If possible, I would tell him to become strong, truly strong. Never look back, no matter how painful it is. I would tell him to advance, to reach that peak where none have thread. Only then, realize how small that endeavor truly was. And laugh, for there is no sadness in being small, only pride to be enjoyed once you topple the great. Do not… repeat the tragedy of fate, do not become weak as I have.” Said Vanguard, nodding.

"No, I think I understand a little better. There would be no point in looking back and weeping at the past. But, there is still the present. I can change the present, and perhaps make it better."

David grinned.  It was not often that someone finds the answer to that kind of personal doubt so easily.  David stood up.  There was not much else for him to do now.

"Vanguard, I see you still have a strong heart.  It is extremely rare for a person to have such high introspective skill, to be able to look into their heart and find an answer.  Your body may be gone but your spirit is very strong.  Maybe that is what keeps your armor in one piece, not the magic of the gods.  If I have interpreted your story correctly, you stood as a powerful beacon, defending the land from invasion, your strength only matched by your unwavering will.  The secret to that strength was not your raw power but your ability to preserve.  By looking at a person who resembled you from the eyes of the gods, you have begun to question that will."

"If you ever wanted too I could erase your memories and emotions and turn you into nothing but a doll.  That would be the closest thing to giving up I could imagine.  Most people have a time limit to make change in their lives. You aren't limited by that constraint.  As long as this city stands, you have time to find your answer.  I will always be willing to help you on your path to self discovery, free of charge.  Well as long as I have the time of course."

David turned around, thinking to himself.

"Ah one more thing.  I said before that I believe you have the potential to be the worlds greatest teacher.  I made an error in saying that as your therapist.  A therapist should only offer interpretations but shouldn't make such strong suggestions.  However now that our session is finished, I will talk as David Borrus, your potential friend."  David said softly.  He then turned around, facing Vanguard once more.

"I believe that you can be one of the greatest teachers this world has ever known.  You have been through a lot, more than a man ever should.  You have experience and time necessary to change the world one step at a time.  Im not sure about reality itself but you can change people, slowly but surely.  In this city power isn't everything, only wisdom, experience and wit stand the test of time."  He looked to Vanguard, feeling a bit bad that he crossed the line as a therapist.

"No, I will not allow that. If I did, it would be equivalent to denying what happened in order for empty comfort. Killing the one remaining ray of knowledge that the infinite number of records I observed possess would be the heigth of folly. There is no need to erase anything." said Vanguard as he shook his head.

"But I see your point, David. I will keep your words in mind. For now, I would like to thank you. It was a rare pleasure, and it would be an honor to consider you a friend."

Rising, he grabbed onto his cane and looked up.

"Still, I need an answer. It is still question of clearing my heart of doubt, and end it once and for all. Perhaps then I will be able to resume my quest, but first, there is something I must settle. If I return tomorrow here at dawn, it will mean that I have found what I have sought." Said Vanguard.

The fact that the firing had stopped registered in the immortal's mind as he continued to move, sweeping waves of the shadowkhan away. Then the ninjas backed away as a whole as one of their number stepped up and threw down a smoke bomb that quickly clouded Michael's vision. Frowning, he started to back away as quickly as he could manage with Natara still keeping a hand on him, closing his eyes and focusing on what he could hear. Useless against the Shadowkhan, perhaps, but the bullets, on the other hand...

Smoke cloud. They're having their minions advance under smoke cover, and probably from behind, as they don't make any sound when they move. The specialist has already revealed themselves, so there's no reason to have them hold back any more...

As expected, the specialist had switched from burst fire to fully automatic, abandoning trying to hit them for the sake of suppressive fire. Michael ignored the bullets that would go wide, only deflecting whatever would have hit himself or Natara as they continued to back out of the smoke cloud, trying to clear it. Given the visual obstruction and the inaccuracy inherent in firing full auto, the number of bullets he had to deflect was surprisingly few. Then the meaty thumps of something striking several bodies registered behind him.

That Trinity-damned nuisance again?

The throaty hiss that followed was all he needed to hear.

"Duck," Michael says, lashing out behind him with a one-handed grip, staff lengthening to the 12-foot version to try to catch the expected Corrupted Shadowkhan. The resistance to his staff was a fair bit heavier than expected, at which point he realized that he'd accidentally hit Natara as well with that shot.

Roxas

Roxas walked for a while.  He wasn't sure what to do now.  He promised Vanguard that he would become a body guard or a police officer.  Eventually, he came upon a girl in the streets.  It looked like she had been sleeping there for a while.

Why has no one stopped to help her?  This is a city.  No one should be sleeping outside.

"Excuse me?  Ma'am?  Are you ok?"  he said with concern in his voice.

Rikuyo

"Huh?" She slowly opened her eyes, roused from sleep by someone's voice. The voice that belonged to someone younger than her, a teen with golden hair. A hair color she have never seen in her life. And only heard about in tales that people spread about foreigners that once came across the blue sea. "Wow! I've never seen a foreigner before! Your hair looks so pretty!" she exclaimed with enthusiasm, so curious about the hair of the boy that she tried to ruffle his without asking for permission.

Roxas

As Roxas called out to the girl, she woke up.  Thinking he was a foreigner she tried to ruffle through his hair with her hand.  "Wow! I've never seen a foreigner before! Your hair looks so pretty!" she exclaimed with enthusiasm. On reflex, Roxas lightly swatted her hand away.  "What?  A foreigner?"  He exclaimed, confused.  Although, he wasn't from the Nexus so maybe that does mean he is a foreigner.  He relaxed his guard.
